First ACC Event in Africa

A CC hosted its first program in Nairobi, Kenya on July 19, 2016, and welcomed more than 50 in-house counsel from various organizations including Safaricom, Google, Unilever, and East African Breweries Limited. Ms. Rosa Nduati-Mutero and Dominic Rebelo, both partners at Anjarwalla & Khanna, the ALN firm sponsoring the inaugural event, shared new legal developments with attendees such as how to train staff to respond to dawn raids, how to spot restrictive trade practice in their contracts, and how to abide by the new Companies Act.

“Since the promulgation of the
new Constitution in August 2010, Kenya has enacted over 158 Acts of Parliament and 749 pieces of subsidiary legislation,” says Farah Esmail, head of legal – East Africa of Orbit Chemical Industries Limited, and former ACC Baltimore board member who initiated the event. “This event was a welcome opportunity to share information with fellow in-house counsel about membership in ACC and the current developments in the law, explore new opportunities for cooperation, and allow for a much needed forum for in-house counsel to network.”
