ACC Quebec Holds First Annual Meeting

On September 17, 2018, the ACC Quebec Chapter held its first annual meeting at the Club St-James in Montreal. The conference, sponsored by Borden Ladner Gervais, had 103 attendees — the majority of whom were non-members.

The conference focused primarily on soft skills, responding to the needs and interests expressed by the in-house community of Quebec. The decision also reflects the chapter's philosophy to move away from specialized law topics to universal content that is accessible to all their members, regardless if they concentrate on insurance law or employment law and so forth.

The ACC Quebec team worked with presenters to customize the content to the in-house audience, so attendees received completely original presentations. The conference began with a talk by Vincent Denault, a professor at UQAM university, on "Non-verbals and Credibility, Science for Best Practices," which dissected non-verbal communication and how to use it to assess the credibility of others and build your own.

He was followed by Eric Brunelle, a professor at HEC Montreal Business School, on "Head, Heart, Courage: A Simple Tool to Exercise Better Leadership." This presentation offered a reflection on leadership and provided participants with solutions, as well as tools to better understand the complex phenomenon to achieve self-leadership in the practice.

During the lunch break, sponsored by Lexis Nexis, Eloise Gratton and Elisa Henry from Borden Ladner Gervais spoke on the "Top Ten Legal Risks in Privacy." Afterward, Stéphanie Roy, from Pascal de Guise, delivered a presentation on "Discussions and Testimonials on the Importance and Relevance of Expertise in Clear Language/Legal Design for the Legal Community." Lastly, Pierre Lainey, a professor at HEC Montreal business school, discussed "The Exercise of Influence."

After the conference, the chapter hosted a cocktail hour, sponsored by Legal Suite, for participants to network with their peers and celebrate the ACC Quebec Chapter's 10th anniversary! ACC Quebec looks forward to sharing best practices and lessons learned from this experience with other ACC chapters. The chapter also extends a heartfelt thanks to its wonderful sponsors who made the event possible.
